#Urban Imaginaries
Music videos often expose realities of local communities, circulating them across platforms and borders. They display forms of architecture that characterise an area, highlighting the people and social circles which swirl amongst static structures. How are local realities and changing notions of public space represented in contemporary music videos?

#Technologies of Circulation
Video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram TV, Facebook Live, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter’s Periscope, Twitch and TikTok have developed into cultural archives and discursive spaces, establishing new modes of engagement, production and circulation of video.

#Staging Realities
Beyond music videos lie constructed spaces and material realities that are not always easily visible or accessible. Interdisciplinary teams invent spatial, cinematographic, and post-production techniques to create fictional realities. Stage designs for live music performances are video sets to accommodate the different camera angles used by the audience when recording and circulating footage on social media.

#Forms of Representation
Since the early 1980's, the music video has been both a controversial and transgressive medium. Music videos both affirm and question dominant forms of representation. They articulate questions around gender, race, class, power relations and lived realities. A promotional tool for artists, the music video also continues to be a medium for experimental and critical practice.

#Gender and Performativity
Gender is scripted, adapted, adopted and processed as a complex web of expressions that might be repeated, or not. The everyday performance of gender that is sanctioned by one’s social context to be permissible or not is doubled in cultural representations. Music videos allow the performer to test cultural sanctions, but they are also vehicles for selling music. (From Eliza Steinbock: Dyke Camp is Not (Quite) Iconic Queer Gender, 2019)

#Remix, Reuse, Recycle
Platforms as YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, Facebook Live, Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter’s Periscope, Twitch and TikTok have brought a more diverse and complex audiovisual landscape, allowing artists to produce and distribute their videos independently, and allowing fans to remix or reuse videos with new or existing footage.

#Techniques of Post-production
What used to be a straightforward, material process of cutting and rearranging film strips has turned into a multi-step, multi-medium orchestration. “Post-production”, now encapsulates a long list of specialists that contribute a wide range of visual and auditory augmentations. What are the ethical and political landscapes of this space, now so far removed from the material?

#Modes of Spectatorship
Are we always already spectators on the receiving end of what is communicated through the music video, or is the relationship more horizontal than it appears? The audience represents a collective body that both influences the actions of artists and industry professionals through their consumption, and is influenced by the artists whose content they consume. Music videos are social objects, enabling many modes of spectatorship and forms of exchange.

#Activism and Performance
Music videos offer a public space for activism and emancipation, by exposing existing realities and by imagining alternatives.

#Fandoms
Around an artist or group, people gather in online communities to bond, create and share. What manifests amongst these digital networks is an international collective with strong affective links. But the business of recording industries and the platforms on which fandoms live can be problematic. How do we recognise the pitfalls of entertainment and digital platforms, when they have contributed so much to our sense of identity?

#For the Record series
The For the Record event series at Het Nieuwe Instituut took the form of a public recording studio. Not only to visualize the forms of production and postproduction that are deployed in video, but also to record and share the conversations as a video in itself. From Reading Apeshit, Performing Gender and Staging Realities, to K-Pop Fandoms, Rendering Climate and Urban Imaginaries.

#Rendering Climate
Recently, popular music videos take on urgent environmental issues, and discuss local and global imaginaries. Visual communication strategies within artistic practice, activism and journalism make the data driven evidence of climate change increasingly visual.

#The Space of the Screen
Screens mediate both public and intimate experiences. They are not only devices of representation but also devices for intervening in the world.

#DIY culture
With the increasing affordability of production technology everyone can be a producer. Amidst the explosion of user generated content, how are DIY innovations and aesthetics being appropriated by big-time production companies?

#Music Television
Since 1981, when the US video channel MTV infiltrated domestic space and with Video Killed the Radio Star, the music video has revolutionized youth culture and has been a controversial and transgressive medium.
