Deep Decisions? investigates deepfake technology in music videos, deconstructing its mode of production, its potential of replicating existing cultural and social biases based on the data fed into the generative adversarial networks (GANs), its copyright controversy and impersonation danger, and speculating about its future development in terms of artistic value and media impact.

The research includes a growing database of articles and music videos that will be extended with new material generated through deepfake experimentation, as well as interviews with sociologists, journalists, filmmakers, deepfake designers, and archive experts. Deep Decisions? will take the form of a video essay telling the multi-layered story of deepfake technology in music videos through fictionalisation and synthetic media imagery.

We are KMworks, an information design and research practice based in the Netherlands and founded by Miruna Dunu and Karin Fischnaller. With a background in architecture and creative coding, we deconstruct the world around us in streams of information, reassembling them in comprehensive narratives. Working at the intersection of design, technology and spatiality, we apply methodologies such as visual journalism, research-by-design, archiving, and design fiction, in order to expose hidden economies, mechanisms of power, and infrastructural dynamics.
